By operating on principles of decentralization, transparency, and user data sovereignty, HexHoot aims to provide authenticated, encrypted communication without relying on central authorities. All user data, including keys and message history, is stored locally on the user's device, enhancing privacy and control.
The platform employs a peer-to-peer and serverless architecture, where nodes connect directly or through intermediate peers. Solutions for node discovery, NAT traversal, and efficient routing are integral to its design, enabling local-network operation even when global internet infrastructure is disrupted. Authentication is handled using zero-knowledge proof concepts, allowing peers to prove possession of private keys without revealing them.
Key exchange and encryption are managed through elliptic-curve Diffie-Hellman (ECDH) style methods to derive shared symmetric keys, ensuring messages are encrypted and readable only by legitimate parties. While this local-first approach maximizes privacy, it places the responsibility for backups and device security squarely on the user.
